Pundit View: David Prutton makes Championship promotion battle comparison

[ad_pod ]

In David Prutton’s Yorkshire Evening Post column, the former footballer has made an intriguing comparison regarding the Championship promotion battle and the Premier League title race.

What’s he said?

The race for second spot in the Championship this season has been absolutely fascinating with Sheffield United and Leeds trading blows as the weeks go by.

Chris Wilder’s men have been massive overachievers this season but completely deserve to be where they are. It’s unlikely that Leeds would have expected to be where they are either but under Marcelo Bielsa, they’ve been an attractive side to watch and seem to be pulling results out of the bag right when it matters.

However, things are far from certain and could take a turn again on Easter Monday. In his weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton made an interesting and incredibly flattering comparison, analysing how both sides’ fight could be compared to Manchester City and Liverpool’s. He said:

“But if you look at the Premier League you have got two very, very good teams pushing each other on in Liverpool and Manchester City and, with Leeds and Sheffield United, it’s the same.

“They have pushed each other on and there has been a real commitment to making sure there is pressure on the other one throughout the course of the season.”

Battle hotting upThis has been one of the most interesting football seasons across all levels of the game for quite some time. The Premier League title race and top four is yet to be decided whilst it’s still far from clear who will claim second spot and the play-off places in the Championship.Prutton’s comments are symbolic of this and recent fixtures tell you all you need to know. After Leeds lost to Sheffield United it looked as though the Blades would be in the driving seat. All they had to do was win their remaining games to guarantee promotion. But as we know, football isn’t a simple game. The tide continues to turn at the top of the Championship and recent draws with Birmingham and Millwall may have a significant effect on the Blades’ hopes. However, the two games over the Easter period will likely also have a massive impact on who ultimately takes second place in a few weeks’ time. It’ll be fascinating to see who deals with the pressure best.
